Shape: Though small, this spear has a well-defined hamon.
Jigane: The small itame-hada is well-forged.
Hamon: Nioi-based gunome-midare.

Features: This spear is known as a "Kago yari," which was kept inside a palanquin by high-ranking samurai with substantial stipends for protection. The ko-jiri (butt end) is made of iron, and the wood is coated in black lacquer with a beautifully executed gold dragon motif.

Aoi Art’s Comment: During the late Edo period, there was a lot of unrest due to the conflict between the imperial loyalists and the shogunate supporters. High-ranking samurai officials would often travel in palanquins and carry concealed weapons, such as this spear, for protection. The dragon design painted in gold on this spear is exceptionally well-executed.
