Tanto: Ichi Chounsai Tsunatoshi (2nd Generation)(NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Token)

Ordering number:23890

Tanto in Shirasaya (NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Token)

Signature: Ichi Chounsai Tsunatoshi (2nd Generation)
Meiji 1 Nen 12 Gatsu (December 1868)
一長運斎綱俊(2代)
明治元年十二月

Shinshinto: Jyo Saku, Musashi Province.
We divide the craftsmanship into four levels: Saijyo Saku, Jyojyo Saku, Jyo Saku, and Regular Saku.
This piece is ranked as Jyo Saku among the works of Ichi Cho Unsai Tsunatoshi.
Habaki: Single-layered silver.
Blade Length: 19.5 cm (7.68 in).
Curvature: 0.0 cm (0.00 in).
Mekugi Hole: 1.
Width at Base (Motohaba): 2.56 cm (1.01 in).
Thickness of Rim (Kasane): 0.75 cm (0.30 in).
Sword Weight: 180 grams.
Era: December, Meiji Period, Year 1 (1868).
Shape: A slightly smaller tanto with a bohi (groove) carved on the front and a double groove (futasuji-bi) on the back.
The thickness of the blade is robust, with about 3 cm (1.18 in) of unsharpened steel at the base, making it a sturdy piece.
Jigane (Forging): A tight and well-crafted ko-itame pattern, resulting in a refined texture that appears plain and smooth.
Hamon (Temper Line): A small, well-formed nie structure with continuous togari-gunome, transitioning into a ko-maru return at the tip.

Features: This tanto is notable for its signature, which resembles that of the first generation, even though it was made in the era of the second generation (Meiji 1).
The NBTHK identifies it as a 2nd-generation piece.
It is a rare work from the 2nd generation and notable because, by Meiji 4 (1871), the Haitorei Edict banned swordmaking, marking this as a product of the final era when swords were still crafted.

Aoi Art’s Comment: An intriguing detail is the "Ichi" character added before "Choun-sai."
The character style of "sai" differs from typical 2nd-generation works, making this a unique and historically valuable piece.
*There is approximately 8 mm of rust about 1 cm above the habaki. Please place your order only if you understand this condition.
