Shape: This piece has a wide mihaba and mitsu-mune, with bohi carved on both sides, and is free of flaws.
Jigane: The itame hada mixed with ko-mokume shows utsuri.
Hamon: The hamon is made of nie, with a suguha notare pattern. The boshi is notare, turning back in a small round shape.

Features: Rai Kunitoshi, also known as Rai Magotarō, is said to have used the name Minamoto. He is considered the father of the two-character Kunitoshi, and it is thought that he initially signed as Kunitoshi, later as Rai Kunitoshi. Kunitoshi is a highly esteemed swordsmith rated as Saijyo Saku.

Fuchikashira: Iron fittings with sakura blossom decorations.
Saya: A scabbard resembling the bark of a pine tree.
Menuki: Plum and chrysanthemum flowers carved in solid gold.
Kozuka: An iron ground with a design of birds in flight, decorated in gold and silver inlay.

Aoi Art’s Comment: This slightly longer and thicker work by Rai Kunitoshi comes with the NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon certificate. The koshirae features a sakura blossom motif, with menuki likely made of solid gold. The saya is also of excellent craftsmanship, making it a highly recommended piece.
