Features:This is a superb Tachi crafted by Sumitani Masamine, a Living National Treasure.
It features a dignified and deep curvature with an extended kissaki and excellent shape.
The blade displays vibrant activity such as sunagashi and kinsuji.
Sumitani Masamine, born Sumitani Yoichiro, graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Ritsumeikan University in 1941.
He then apprenticed under swordsmith Sakurai Masayuki.
He established the Nihonto Tanrensho “Sanryutei” in the city of Matsuto, producing many works.
In the 1960s, he won the highest award for newly-made swords, the Masamune Prize, three times.
On April 20, 1981, he was designated a Living National Treasure.
That same year, he was also recognized as a holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property for "Japanese Swords."
He researched steel production, developed his own smelting process, and perfected a unique choji-midare called “Sumitani Choji.”
He also crafted swords for the Imperial Family, including a mamori-gatana (protective sword) presented to the Emperor.
He passed away on December 12, 1998, at the age of 77.
