Features: Yoshihara Shoji was born in 1945.
He learned sword-making techniques from his grandfather, the first Kuniie, and studied the Bizen tradition with his brother Yoshindo.
He received several accolades, including the Agency for Cultural Affairs Commissioner’s Award,
Mainichi Newspaper Award, Encouragement Award, and Effort Award, and was selected multiple times in the New Sword Exhibition.
Two years after crafting this piece, in 1982, he became a Mukansa (no-judgment-needed) swordsmith.
He was designated as an Intangible Cultural Property holder by Tokyo (Katsushika Ward).
In 2003, he appeared as a swordsmith in the movie "The Last Samurai."
He passed away on May 28, 2023, at the age of 78.
Yoshihara Shoji is considered one of the leading contemporary swordsmiths.
