Bizen Suke Fujuwara Munetsugu is the same person as Koyama Munetsugu. He was born in Mutsu and made swords for Shirakawa Matsudaira family, the feudal lord of Shirakawa in Mutsu. He moved to Edo and received the title of Bizen Suke in 1846. It is said that Munetsugu had a fastidiousness not to put his works on the market if they had flaws, and in fact, I have never seen a piece with a bad work or flaw. Many of his works have Saidan-mei and are said to cut well. It is said that he had a relationship with Yamada Asaemon, an executioner and trial cutter, and received his advice on cutting ability.
The blade pattern of this work shows Muneji's unique style well. The polishing applied is excellent and brings out the charm of the blade well.
