Description: Tomei Araki was born in Kyoto in 1817 (Bunka 14). At the age of thirteen, he apprenticed under Goto Tosen, who allowed him to use the character “To” (東), adopting the name Tomei. Later, he studied under Goto Ichijo and was permitted to use the art name "Issai Tomei." He also studied under Kyoto painter Rin'ga Hayashi to learn underdrawings. Tomei's renowned awaho carvings were developed through studies with Rin'ga, and he became famous for these awaho designs.
This work truly embodies the essence of "Tomei is here." Each piece of hardware reflects Tomei’s exceptional skill and meticulous use of his signature awaho, showcasing his pride and responsibility towards this motif. The skillful representation of awaho in full bloom, nearly spilling from the designs, illustrates Tomei’s mastery, making this a standout work of excellence. (From the Juyo Tosogu certificate)
