Signature: Mumei (attributed to Tegai Kanekiyo 手掻包清, late Nanbokucho to Oei period)

We divide 4 sections for each sword as Saijyo Saku, Jyojyo Saku, Jyo Saku, and Regular Saku.
This work is ranked as Jyo Saku for Mumei (Tegai Kanekiyo).

Habaki: Single-layered, made of plain copper.
Blade Length: 28.5 cm (11.22 in)
Curvature: 0.1 cm (0.04 in)
Mekugi Holes: 2
Width at Base: 3.1 cm (1.22 in)
Thickness: 0.5 cm (0.20 in)
Sword Weight: 210 grams
Era: Late Nanbokucho to Oei period (1390), approximately 634 years ago.
Shape: The blade has a mitsumune (three-sided spine), wide width, and slightly thin thickness.
There is almost no curvature, characteristic of the Nanbokucho period.
Jigane: Fine ko-itame hada, with well-packed grain and visible shirake utsuri (white reflective patterns).
Hamon: Made with nie, the nioiguchi becomes deeper near the boshi, and nie particles increase near the tip.

Features: This tanto has a wide blade with thin thickness, showing a style typical of the late Nanbokucho period. Its length adds to its charm.

Koshirae:
Tsuba: The tsuba features high-relief carvings of pea vines and pods, with gold inlay.
Menuki, Fuchi-Kashira, Kojiri: High-relief carvings of pea vines and pods, with gold inlay.
Saya: Black textured ishime saya.
Kozuka: Red copper base, depicting bell crickets and butterflies in gold.

Aoi Art’s Comment:Although unsigned, this tanto attributed to Tegai Kanekiyo is housed in a beautiful endou mame (pea vine) motif koshirae. It is a superb work.
