A word from Aoi Art : Araki Tomei, who gained great popularity in the late Edo period, was born in 1817. He studied under Goto Tohjo and Goto Ichijo, receiving the names "Toh" and "Ichi" from them, and began signing his works as Issai Tomei. He learned sketching from the Kyoto painter Hayashi Ranka, and his signature work, the millet cluster carvings, is said to have been conceived through his research with Ranka. The exceptional quality of his work continues to captivate and be highly prized by many enthusiasts even today.
